A note to let you all know what is actually growing here at Rose Mountain Farm, aside from the pigs.

In the 1-acre field are 240 tomato plants of several varieties:
Cherokee Purple
Granny Smiths
Ox Hearts
White Wonder
Roma
Cherry Toms

In the Squash Family we have:
Winter Squash
Butternut
Crook-necked
Sunburst
Zucchini
Straight Neck

Also we have Spring onions, Garlic, Beets, Carrots, Christmas Lima's, Sweet Bantam Corn, Kentucky Tenderettes, and Wren's Egg dried beans.

In the 3/4-acre field are Irish Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Okra, and Cabbage.

As these vegetables arrive, I will be giving you one week's notice of the harvest, so that the newsletter recipients can order ahead of time! I will prepare boxes of your orders, and you may pick them up at the Ashe County Farmer's Market on Saturday's before noon, or we can arrange another pickup if Saturday is inconvenient.

I will be starting a late lettuce bed of a mixed variety of leaf lettuce. If anyone wants to order a special lettuce to be grown, please RSVP ASAP.

Eat healthy, Stay healthy

June Newsletter

Howdy folks!

All is well here on the farm. The planting was a success this week, with the rain coming just in time to wet the soil for the growing tomatoes. The squash are zucchini green and looking stout. The tater tops are thick and luscious (I wonder if you can eat them) ( is that where tater tots come from? haha).

The critters are well and all is turning green, finally. The milk sales have 'hit the roof' and the yogurt is going like ice in August. We are awaiting the arrival of the kiefer starter, so look for that to be added to the list of available products, in lieu of butter. We started the shiitake logs this week, and are going to prepare 10-15 per week to stagger the harvest time this fall.

The sales at the market were awesome and I thank every one who bought the eggs and herbs. I sold out at 11:30! I will have more basil, chives, and summer savory this Saturday, and of course, the delightful brown eggs with orange yolks.

We'll have new pictures up on the picture gallery at http://www.rosemountainfarm.com/pics.htm this week, so check out our progress!

Eat well, stay well.
